LOVE FOR BEGINNERS // 情書

My dearest,

I remember when we first started living together we would get hungry in the middle of the night sometimes. Blame our penchant for early dinners for this occasional emergency. What we would do is stock up on instant soup sachets from the supermarket. Just add boiling water, and we would have a mug of hot soup.

It was mostly starch and had plenty of artificial flavouring, but on cold, rainy nights, it was quite wonderful, especially when we would share the soup between the two of us, passing the mug back and forth.

These days, we are more ambitious. A place of our own, a decent kitchen. We make our soups from scratch, using whole chickens and fresh ingredients. Put the cooker on low heat, and simply wait. It’s not instantaneous any more but we still share our soup.

Always good, always yummy. Tasty and wholesome enough to nourish a life together. A promise of warmth and care during cold, rainy nights. That’s all we need, really.

Yours, ever and always.
