My dearest,
“You know what? I feel like cooking tonight!”
“Okay,” I say.
“I’m tired of eating out. Let’s eat in. Something simple.”
“Okay,” I say.
“Maybe we can go and buy some fresh udon from Sanuki and cook it ourselves. We’ve never done that before. Let’s try!”
“Okay,” I say.
“I’ll make it dry, with a sauce. A soy sauce and sesame oil base. Simple.”
“Okay,” I say.
“Of course, you know what will be really good with it? Some fried scallions — that’d be so aromatic!”
“Okay,” I say.
“And I can make one of those Thai omelettes you made me — you know, the one with the lime juice and fish sauce?”
“Okay,” I say.
“Some green veges, just toss them in with the udon and the boiling water. Hmm, just missing something. Oh, I got it! How about some fried lard and lard oil? That would be awesome!”
“Okay,” I say.
“Yeah, I can see it now. Udon with fried lard, scallion oil and a soy-sauce-sesame-oil base and slivers of Thai omelette. Actually, that sounds like a lot of work. Uhm, why don’t you cook it instead?”
“I KNEW IT!”
Yours, ever and always.
