My dearest,
I look left. I look right. The girls are busy behind the bar, working in unison to grind the beans, brew the coffee, pour welcome glasses of water, wash the cups and dishes… So seamlessly, so smooth. And all this done with the utmost of attention and care… and a smile on their face.
One of the girls notice me and ask me why I am smiling, why my head keeps turning from one side to the other like a tennis match. I tell here we don’t have a television set at home (we don’t watch much TV anyway) and this is the closest we get to entertainment.
She smiles and tell us it’s the same for them too, on the other side. Our little humourous bouts of bickering, our taking pictures of the coffee and the café, our quiet reading of our books… We’re entertainment for them too.
Yours, ever and always.
