LOVE FOR BEGINNERS // 情書

My dearest,

Our friends gave us this tablecloth
The perfect size for our picnic table
Now the slats and the gaps
(Through which everything fell:
Cutlery, pens, hopes and dreams)
Are now covered by clean linen
(A snow field, a white shield)
And the proud declaration,
“Mr. & Mr.”

These abbreviations,
These titles tell a story:
Two young men who met
Years and years ago.
They had shacked up together
Rather quickly, worrying
Their friends, concerned
These two young men
Were too different.
Were from different worlds.

And so we were.
Very different, indeed.
And not of the same world.

Ah, but:
These two young men grew older
Grew old together.
Became more alike than
Either would care to admit,
And built their own world
Together.
Friend now say, It was
Always meant to be.
Mr. & Mr.
(That’s you and me.)

Yours, ever and always.
