My dearest,
Here are a couple of Chinese New Year gifts we have yet to use — two small Moleskine notebooks, thin enough to fit in our pockets. One is orange, one is yellow. One for me, one for you.
“Which one would you like?” I ask.
“Whichever lah. Doesn’t matter,” you say.
“Yes, it does. I want you to have the first choice.”
You smile, obviously pleased.
“Okay, I’ll take the yellow one.”
“Good, cos I want the orange one.”
“Oh? What if I had chosen the orange one?”
“I’d have still given you the yellow one. I said you had the first choice — you just had to make the right choice too. And you did. Isn’t it great we both got what we wanted?”
I smile, like a tiger, like a fox, fat and pleased.
Yours, ever and always.
